C20 GALERIE

The main structural objectives of the re-design were achieved by converting the front of the building into the showroom/office area, and the back section into a two-bedroomed house. To improve the overall aesthetic and flow of the storefront, I added new fold-a-side entrance doors at the front of the building, a new front wall and fence, and a translucent sheet roof with painted timber battens that would allow dappled light to shine through the showroom. Windows were changed throughout the building to significantly modify the space as a whole.  At the rear of the building, part of the existing roof was removed in order to introduce a small but very effective internal courtyard. This allowed natural light into the five spaces surrounding the courtyard—the two bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen and lounge. The resulting building is a modern, light-filled version of a Woodstock row-house that has brought new life and function to an ailing structure, while passing the Woodstock Heritage Area design requirements.

My Design

The client is the owner of the C20 Galerie—an antiques and vintage shop and interior consulting company specializing in mid-century collectibles. My client bought a run-down semi-detached house in Roodebloem Rd, Woodstock that was in dire need of a complete makeover. The building had lost the integrity of its original structure after several unappealing additions and bad builds. My client wished to convert the property into a space that would operate both as a business premises and residential space.
