HOUSE ACKERMANN

The first component of the re-design was knocking out internal walls at the rear of the building and adding a new lounge. The positioning of the lounge allowed for incredible views of Table Mountain and warmth from North-facing windows. The renovated area provided a better flow of space to the new kitchen at the rear of the home, and was further enhanced by an entertainment deck with stairs to the garden below. The existing kitchen cupboards were re-used wherever possible, with new joinery added as needed. Well-designed bookshelf units were added to the formal lounge to accommodate the client's large collection of books and to compliment the old style of the room. The result of the addition is a light and airy space with an uncluttered feel that retains its old character.

My Design

My clients’ house in Rosebank had been added onto over the years in a way that made the rear of the building dark and cramped. They wished to change this warren of spaces, move the position of their kitchen, achieve better circulation of space, and obtain clearer views of Table Mountain. Strangely positioned floor levels within the house also presented a design challenge.
