WINFORD FARM

The footprint of the existing cottage became a part of the design, housing two of the four bedrooms within the total structure. This part of the house leads out to the garden shaded by a large Ficus tree. A lowered lean-to roof connects the cottage to the new structure housing the kitchen, dining room, lounge, bedroom and en-suite bedroom. A large roofed stoep provides an area for outdoor entertainment, allowing the house to be used for recreation in the winter months. Materials proposed for the structure include existing stone found on site, exterior nutec cladding, re-used timber beams harvested from alien trees on the property, bagged brickwork and alien black wattle latte pergolas. Roofs are simple mono-pitches with lean-to’s clipped onto stoeps, walkways and entrances. Strategically placed windows make use of the light and views. Overall, the design and selected materials provide a laid back environment comfortable and welcoming to guests and family alike.

My Design

This house was designed to be a main residential space on a farm in Simonstown. The clients desired an upmarket house that can be rented out to foreign visitors and resident holidaymakers, as well as operate as a family home when not leased out. Main requirements of the structure were as follows: it needed to relate to the surrounding Cape fynbos landscape, obtain North side sun and views, and remain within the existing footprint of the old pigsty and cottage. Lastly and importantly, the house required a design that included solar electricity and bio-digesters to accommodate being off the grid.
